Authorized (Franchised) Distributor
Definition
An authorized distributor, also called a franchised distributor, sells electronic components under a direct franchise agreement with the original component manufacturer. Stock flows straight from the manufacturer with full documentation, which is what gives this channel the strongest chain-of-custody assurance.
Why it matters
Authorized distribution is the default and lowest-risk channel for components that are still in production. Because the parts come directly from the maker, traceability is complete and counterfeit risk is minimal. This is why quality standards and many procurement policies prefer authorized sources whenever a part is available through them.
The limitation is coverage. Authorized distributors carry active, in-production parts. Once a component goes End of Life and the last-time-buy window closes, authorized distributors sell through remaining stock and then show zero availability. At that point sourcing shifts to the independent and broker channels, where vetting becomes essential.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an authorized distributor?+
An authorized or franchised distributor sells components under a direct agreement with the original manufacturer. Because stock comes straight from the maker with full documentation, authorized distribution offers the strongest chain-of-custody assurance and the lowest counterfeit risk. Digi-Key, Mouser, Arrow, and Avnet are common examples.
What is the difference between an authorized and an independent distributor?+
An authorized distributor has a franchise agreement with the manufacturer and sells factory-new stock with full traceability. An independent distributor buys and sells on the open secondary market without manufacturer authorization. Authorized is preferred for in-production parts; independent distributors fill the gap for obsolete, allocated, and hard-to-find parts that have left authorized supply.
